A Pelahatchie woman named Jessica Leeann Sledge was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment by the Court of U.S. on Monday.

The woman is accused of attempting to hire an assassin through dark web using Bitcoin.

Jessica is sentenced to the statutory of 120 months in prison for "using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a murder-for-hire," according to United States Attorney Darren J. LaMarca.

According to the charges filed Jessica attempted to contact an assassin online between September 2021 and November 2021 and sent three payments using Whatsapp totaling $10,000 in Bitcoin on October 4, 9, and 10th of 2020.

However the person she hired as the hitman was in fact a special agent of the FBI who arrested her.

The sentence also includes a fine of $1,000 and a term of three years of supervised release after her release from prison.

Bitcoin's use in criminal activities gives critics a reason to justify a ban on cryptocurrencies.
