Wintermute becomes  the latest victim of DeFi hack

September 20, 2022

According to Etherscan, more than 70 different tokens were transferred to “Wintermute exploiter”.

It included $61,350,986 in USD Coin (USDC), 671 Wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC), which is roughly $13,030,061, and $29,461,533 Tether (USDT).

The firm’s OTC and centralized financial operations were unaffected as hackers withdrew funds from DeFi transactions.

Director Evgeny Gaevoy emphasized that user funds are safe, saying market  makers hold twice the stolen amount.

He added that the company  is still treating the hack as a "White hat" event and asked  the hacker to get in touch.

The hacker's wallet has been tracked down by on-chain sleuth ZachXBT, it currently holds around $9 million in ether (ETH) and $38 million in other erc-20 tokens.

Earlier this year, the company accidentally sent $15 million worth of Optimism (OP)  tokens to the wrong address. The token was finally returned by the recipient.
