Online Safety Bill to accommodate Metaverse

October 26, 2022

Ofcom, UK media regulator warned “metaverse” forays from tech giants like Meta and Microsoft are subjected to new rules that force the platform to protect its users from online harm.

Melanie Dawes, Ofcom Chief Executive, said self-regulation of Metaverse, promoted by Meta and others, does not fall under UK online safety law.

The Online Safety Bill is a set of laws designed to prevent harmful content from being widely distributed online.

She added that the upcoming online safety law will be strong enough to target the Metaverse platform and businesses.

Dawes clarified that the metaverse is not legally immune to the new rules.

She also pointed out that there “are some differences” between the metaverse and "traditional" social media.

Dawes stated that moderation is necessary to manage metaverse given the intensity they are adding.
