Shelby:- At the just concluded Permissionless IV event, Aptos Labs, the creator of Aptos Blockchain and Jump Crypto, the Digital assets arm of Jump Crypto, have announced a major breakthrough launch. They have unvieled Web3’s first decentralized hot-storage Protocol called “Shelby”.
Aptos while making the launch said, “Storage is broken. Big Tech controls data. Web3 can’t rely on Web2 infra. It ends now.” It described Shelby as “a chain-agnostic, cloud-speed storage network for streaming video, AI pipelines, DePIN apps, etc.”
Storage is broken. Big Tech controls data. Web3 can't rely on Web2 infra. It ends now.@ShelbyServes, Web3's 1st cloud-grade infra, by @jump_@AptosLabs. Decentralized, monetizable storage for data-rich apps.
Both modern AI workloads and DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) applications push storage demands well beyond what legacy “cold” or archival chains were built to handle. Large language models ingest anywhere from tens to hundreds of terabytes (TB) of text, code, and structured data.
In case of DEPIN networks, a single high-resolution camera node can stream 100–500 GB/day with networks of hundreds of nodes quickly hitting 10s–100s TB per month.
Amid this massive storage demands, Shelby aims to serve as Web3’s native cloud-grade solution. It aims to not just store data but also serve it with “sub-second responsiveness with built-in economic incentives.” It uses a dedicated fiber network to handle the data required to work in AI, decentralized applications (dApps) or in streaming videos.
Shelby breaks the cold data storage Protocol to follow the hot storage model. Built on Aptos, it powers sub-second reads and monetized incetives. Under its fibre network, the Nodes can earn protocol-level rewards for each data read they serve – thus ending the system of merely storing data.
Unlike the web2 cloud solutions such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), it doesn’t merely store the data but incentivises it every time the data is accessed.
Can Shelby Compete with Web2 Cloud Storage Models?
Shelby aims to deliver Web2-level performance and features such as sub-second CDN speeds, edge caching, usage-based pricing to its web3 users. While adding these, it is also promising decentralization, economic alignment, and on-chain programmability that traditional clouds can’t match.
These do present it as an strong web3 alternative to AWS/Azure/Google. Unlike the centralised solutions where all usage fees flow back to the provider, Aptos’ cloud platform offers “read-to-earn” mechanism. It rewards both node operators and content creators for every data access.
This can unlock new business models e.g. pay-per-view video, dynamic NFT royalties. that centralized clouds can’t natively support. Thus, there are certain definitive advantages that Aptos and Jump’s cloud Protocol Shelby holds.
