Smartphone Race in Web3: After Solana Seeker, Ethereum Phone dGEN1 Launches

Ethereum Phone:- The race to create the ultimate Web3 smartphone is heating up. Following the footsteps of Solana’s Seeker, Freedom Factory last week started shipping the Ethereum-powered dGEN1, a mobile device designed specifically for blockchain enthusiasts, developers, and decentralized application (dApp) users.

It is interesting to note that even though Freedom Factory introduced its Ethereum-based operating system ethOS and dGEN1 last year, the company started shipping it last week only.

dGEN1: Ethereum Phone With its native Web3 OS

Priced at $549.00 USD, the Freedom Factory’s dGEN1 features the first hardware wallet embedded directly into a mobile device. While lacking traditional telecom capabilities, the dGEN1 emphasizes its role as an “on-chain everyday carry,” focusing on blockchain interactions and decentralized communications.

It generates private keys in the device’s Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), ensuring that even software updates cannot extract them. However, too much focus on security can dampen UX – something Solana’s earlier device Saga witnessed.

dGEN’s OS-level wallet is an account abstracted EOA, supporting both Ethereum 4337 sign-in and emulated EOA sign-in. With this, can gain to access on-chain applications through its mobile phone only.

Few blockchain-powered names included in the mobile’s app Store include Fungi, Swop, Huddle 01, Towns, Arbitrum’s largest DEX camelot, Inky by Kraken and web3 games like Dot andYuliverse.

At its core, the device runs ethOS v4, a mobile operating system developed by Freedom Factory over the past four years. The OS offers local transaction decoding, a wallet transaction terminal, biometric signing, and a paymaster feature that can sponsor transactions across all Ethereum Layer 2 networks. Every on-chain app is accessible through the native browser and app store, making it a comprehensive mobile solution for Web3 users.

Vitalik Supported Development

According to Arkham data from last year, Ethereum Vitalik Buterin also supports dgen1 builder Freedom Factory. He reportedly donated 199.9 ETH, valued at over $517,000, to a Gnosis Safe multi-signature contract associated with the ethOS project, which powers the dGEN1 device.

Besides this, Freedom Factory has also secured investment from high-profile figures in the crypto space, including Vitalik Buterin and Balaji Srinivasan, along with support from organizations such as NounsDAO and the Optimism Foundation.

Interestingly, the phone works with Wi-Fi alone, but you also have the option of cellular connectivity through either a physical SIM or eSIM.

What’s Next for Web3 Smartphones

The phone represents an ongoing step by players toward integrating Web3 technology into everyday mobile use.

In the web3 smartphone market, dGEN1 needs to compete with other Web3-focused smartphones like Solana’s Seeker and XProtocol’s XForge. Solana’s Seeker which began shipping this year in August saw 150,000 pre-orders from over 50 countries, and at a price point of $500. SuiPlay0X1, a Web3-focused handheld gaming device developed by Mysten Labs and Playtron also began shipping this year.

However, the dGEN1 Ethereum phone is clearly not intended to replace your iPhone, according to Markus Haas, co-creator of the device and CEO of Freedom Factory.

Haas, explained in his website interview, that the project started in December 2021, and the dGEN1 represents the culmination of three years of dedicated hardware and software development, specifically built for the next generation of crypto users.

The goal, he said, is to enhance the crypto experience: users can continue using their iPhones for everyday tasks, but if they want to explore decentralized finance, NFTs, or on-chain apps, the dGEN1 can be carried alongside as a specialized companion device.
