A new SEC filing reveals that the Tesla CEO now owns 9.2% passive stake in the social media company.

Elon Musk’s stake in Twitter is worth $2.89 billion, based on Twitter's closing price last week.

Twitter shares soared more than 25% in the premarket following the revelation.

Earlier, the eccentric tech billionaire had criticized Twitter for not adhering to free speech.

Elon had asked his followers whether Twitter adheres to free speech or not, 70% of the voters replied in negative.

Many were expecting Elon Musk to launch his own social media platform after the poll’s result.

As Musk’s stake in Twitter is classified as passive, it would be interesting to see how much he would participate in Twitter’s policy making.
