Is Musk Aware Of Twitter India's Censorship of BBC?

April 12, 2023

Elon Musk claims ignorance of Twitter India's content takedown related to a critical BBC documentary on Prime Minister Modi.

The government had ordered Twitter to block over 50 tweets linking to the video of the documentary.

In an interview with the BBC, Musk said the rules in India for social media content were "quite strict," and Twitter couldn't go beyond the laws of the country.

Musk did not disclose why Twitter removed the content or if it was done at the Indian government's request.

In January, the Indian government ordered the blocking of a BBC documentary that questioned Modi's leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The documentary focused on Modi's leadership during the riots, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims.

Elon Musk's comments on the BBC documentary controversy in India highlight the delicate balance that Twitter must strike between respecting a country's laws and upholding free speech.
