From Alibaba to academia: Jack Ma's new chapter in Japan

May 01, 2023

Jack Ma, co-founder of Alibaba Group, has joined the University of Tokyo’s Tokyo College as a visiting professor.

Ma will contribute to research and give seminars on entrepreneurship and innovation.

He will focus on sustainable agriculture and food production as part of his research.

Ma withdrew from public view in 2020 after criticizing Chinese regulators and the Ant Group's planned IPO was pulled.

Beijing's move to halt Ant's IPO kicked off a crackdown on China's private sector.

Regulators sought to curtail the power of tech giants such as Alibaba and Tencent Holdings.

Ma hopes to resume his former job as a teacher someday, and recently accepted a position as an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong.
