US State Montana First To Ban Tiktok

May 18, 2023

Montana has become the first US state to announce a complete ban on the Chinese short video app TikTok.

The ban will take effect from January 1, 2024.

Montana’s governor, Greg Gianforte, said that they are banning Tiktok to protect their citizens’ personal and private data from being harvested by the Chinese Communist party.

Earlier, government employees in the US were told not to use the app on their work phones.

A bill was also introduced in February this year, asking app stores run by the likes of Google and Apple to not offer Tiktok to their users.

However, it might not be easy to enforce such a ban, as there are many ways for users to evade geographic bans, including using a VPN service.

Around 13 countries in the world have banned Tiktok, including China and India.
