Crypto Mixer Tornado Cash Gets Relisted on GitHub

September 23 2022

After facing the wrath of the U.S. Treasury Department'sDepartment's Office of Foreign Assets (OFAC) last month, crypto mixer Tornado Cash got relisted on GitHub on Thursday.

OFAC declared that U.S. citizens would not be infringing sanctions by copying the mixer's code or making it available online.

Tornado Cash is an Ethereum-based mixer that mixes different cryptocurrencies in order to obfuscate the original address.

Last month, U.S. Treasury'sTreasury's Office of Foreign Assets had prohibited Americans from using Tornado Cash.

The mixer was blacklisted and designated under the Specially Designated National list on the grounds that the North Korean hacking group Lazarus had used it in the past.

Earlier, Coinbase had supported the Tornado Cash users in a lawsuit that they brought against OFAC for imposing sanctions on the Crypto mixer.

GitHub's decision to allow code repositories for Tornado Cash on its platform is also motivated by the support shown by the Ethereum developers for the crypto mixer.
