September 2, 2022

In an interview with former Bloomberg columnist Noah Smith, Vitalik Buterin talked about the future of crypto and bitcoin.

Ethereum founder said that in the medium-term future cryptocurrencies will settle down and be only about as volatile as gold or the stock market.

Buterin further said that bitcoin won’t disappear or take over the world completely in 2042 if it replaces gold's store of value component and doesn’t quite take over from the mainstream.

According to Vitalik, over time, existential questions surrounding crypto are going to become more and more settled.

Vitalik also questioned when bitcoin’s issuance will decrease to near zero, how will they make sure the system stays secure. Currently, thousands of BTC are issued every year to maintain the consensus system.

Vitalik said that the highly democratized early proof of work era was a beautiful thing, but it is now unsustainable.
