16th March, 2022

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed the company’s plans to let Instagram users mint NFTs.

Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at a conference at the South By Southwest, Austin, Texas. “We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term,” he announced.

The CEO of the social media giant did not provide any specific date and time when NFTs will be available on Instagram. However, he hinted NFT minting could be available in coming months.

Meta CEO expressed his hopes that one day Instagram users will be able to mint clothes of their digital avatars as NFTs. But he admitted there is a lot of work to be done to make that a reality.

The latest announcement falls in line with the Meta’s ongoing efforts to focus on its Metaverse-related projects.

Earlier in October last year, Facebook rebranded itself to Meta and announced its plans to focus on virtual reality projects in the coming years.

Earlier this year, microblogging platform Twitter unveiled a similar feature that lets users put an NFT they own as their profile picture.
