This week, Web3 found another connection to Elon Musk. Though this was not through Dogecoin or meme coins. Instead, it was through a major executive appointment by the leading blockchain Solana. The network foundation tapped one of Silicon Valley’s most respected cybersecurity leaders for a pivotal role.
The Solana Foundation appointed Michael Coates, Twitter’s first Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and former Head of Security at Mozilla, as it Chief Information Security Officer.
Coates announced the move on LinkedIn, calling it “a new chapter” in a career that has taken him from securing one of the world’s largest social media platforms to helping protect blockchain infrastructure.
“I’ve always been drawn to fast moving new frontiers,” he wrote in a Linkedin post.
The appointment comes at a time when Solana is evolving far beyond its reputation as a high-speed blockchain for decentralized applications.
According to DefiLlama data, Solana today supports nearly $15 billion in stablecoins volume. It has more than $11 billion in total value locked (TVL) across decentralized finance protocols. It has consistently ranked among the industry’s busiest blockchains by decentralized exchange trading volume. As more payment providers, asset managers and tokenization projects build on the network, the security stakes have risen significantly.
That is exactly the challenge Coates says attracted him.
“This is the chain doing tens of billions of dollars in stablecoin volume a day,” he wrote. “It’s processing more transactions daily than most of crypto combined. Solana is establishing itself as the future of financial infrastructure, at massive scale.”
But he also acknowledged that growth brings new risks.
Coates said attackers are increasingly targeting digital assets, while artificial intelligence is making cyber threats more sophisticated. Earlier this year, he also testified before the U.S. Congress on AI-driven cybersecurity risks. He warned about the technology’s growing role in both offensive and defensive security.
“I’m keenly aware of the adversaries’ incentive to separate people from their crypto,” he wrote. “I’m aware of the rising threats from malicious use of AI and the massive power for defense when harnessed effectively.”
Solana Foundation’s new CISO Michael Coates’ background makes him one of the most experienced cybersecurity executives to join a major blockchain ecosystem.
Before entering crypto, Coates served as Head of Security at Mozilla. There he led the security assurance program responsible for Firefox, Mozilla’s web applications and supporting infrastructure. Notably, this was during one of the most competitive periods in browser history.
He later became Twitter’s first Chief Information Security Officer, building the company’s security organization as the social media platform rapidly expanded into a global communications platform.
In 2018, Coates also founded cloud security startup Altitude Networks, which focused on protecting enterprise data across cloud collaboration platforms. The company was acquired by CoinList in 2022, bringing him into the crypto industry. At CoinList, he served first as Chief Information Security Officer and later as Chief Operating Officer. He oversee both security and operational strategy at one of the sector’s best-known token launch platforms.
Beyond his operating roles, Coates has remained an influential figure in cybersecurity. He previously chaired the OWASP Foundation, the global nonprofit behind widely adopted application security standards. And today, Michael Coates invests in early-stage cybersecurity startups through Seven Hill Ventures while serving as an Investor-in-Residence at The General Partnership.
His appointment also reflects a broader shift taking place across the crypto industry.
As blockchains increasingly support stablecoin payments, tokenized securities and real-world assets, cybersecurity is becoming a boardroom priority rather than simply an engineering function. Institutions evaluating blockchain infrastructure are placing greater emphasis on operational resilience, governance and risk management alongside scalability and transaction speeds.
For Solana, hiring a security executive whose career spans Mozilla, Twitter and CoinList signals that the network is preparing for its next phase. This is where trust and resilience could become as important as throughput particularly in the Agentic crypto age.
“Innovation is messy and security is hard,” Coates wrote. “This is the nexus where I enjoy working to solve the hardest challenges alongside the smartest folks around the world.”
