The Prediction market platforms are booming as evident in the recent FIFA world cup event. But now the leading prediction market platform Polymarket is looking for further growth,

For the same, it has appointed Travis VanderZanden as Chief Growth Officer as the company looks to expand its business and bring prediction markets to a wider audience.

VanderZanden announced the appointment in a LinkedIn post, saying he was excited to join Polymarket and help scale the platform.

He brings experience from several major technology companies. VanderZanden previously worked at Uber, where he was involved in growth, and later served as Chief Operating Officer at Lyft. He then founded Bird, the electric scooter company that became one of the better-known names in the micromobility industry.

Much of his career has focused on building and expanding two-sided marketplaces, where different groups of users interact through a common platform.

That experience could be useful for Polymarket as prediction markets continue to grow beyond their early image as platforms mainly used for elections and sports.

Who is Polymarket’s New CGO VanderZanden

VanderZanden said in his announcement that many people still think of prediction markets primarily as places to trade on elections or sporting events.

He believes the potential market is much larger.

According to VanderZanden, Polymarket allows users to put a price on questions about real-world events. Users can buy and sell contracts based on whether a particular event will happen, with market prices changing as participants trade.

The platform has markets covering a wide range of topics, including politics, economics, financial markets, weather and other real-world events.

“Every price on Polymarket is a question the world actually wants answered,” VanderZanden said in his LinkedIn post.

His appointment suggests that Polymarket is putting greater focus on growing the number of people using prediction markets and making the platform more accessible to a broader audience.

Growth comes with a regulatory challenge

Polymarket’s expansion also comes at a difficult time for the industry.

On August 11, the New York City Council opened an investigation into Polymarket, Kalshi, Coinbase and Gemini Titan over concerns about marketing practices and the potential targeting of younger users. The council has asked the companies for information about their advertising and compliance practices.

Polymarket has said it is committed to maintaining accurate, fair and transparent markets and has been restructuring parts of its marketing operation. CFTC has also warned prediction markets of gambling.

However, Prediction markets are also seeing record activity. Combined trading volume across Polymarket, Polymarket US and Kalshi reached $50.6 billion in July, marking a new monthly high. Polymarket’s U.S. platform alone recorded around $5 billion in volume, up 54% from the previous month.

That makes VanderZanden’s appointment particularly significant.

Polymarket is not simply looking to add more users. It needs to build a marketplace that can scale while operating under increasing regulatory and public scrutiny.
