Celebrating Bitcoin’s 15th year, Canadian Member of Parliament Joël Lightbound took a moment to honor the Bitcoin journey. On the Parliament floor, he not only voiced his appreciation for the innovative technology but also made it a point to highlight its anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Beyond expressing admiration, Lightbound disclosed a personal connection to the crypto world, his ownership of Bitcoin. Rather than pushing for people to invest, however, he advocated for deeper comprehension and study of the cryptocurrency. He emphasized the significance of Bitcoin’s inception during a financial downturn and its evolution as a beacon of hope for the underbanked and those under oppressive governance.
Touching upon Bitcoin’s roots, the MP took a moment to reflect on the vision of Satoshi Nakamoto.
“Bitcoin has provided solace to numerous individuals battling currency debasement. Its foundation is undeniably progressive,” Lightbound opined. As the discussion progressed, he remarked, “Today, as we mark the 15th anniversary of the Bitcoin whitepaper, my gratitude goes out to Satoshi Nakamoto, regardless of the mystery surrounding their identity.”
Intriguingly, Lightbound’s speech incorporated views from prominent figures, including former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. However, it was the mention of Gary Gensler, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chief, which garnered considerable attention. Gensler, in a 2019 piece, recognized the groundbreaking potential of Nakamoto’s creation in reshaping economic frameworks.
Concurrently, on the anniversary, Gensler emphasized regulatory compliance in his Twitter shoutout to Nakamoto. His unexpectedly challenging crypto position post his SEC appointment starkly contrasted the optimism many felt due to his prior crypto-focused academic endeavours.
As Bitcoin reaches its 15th anniversary, global discussions and reflections are underway. At the heart of these conversations is the undeniable influence of Satoshi Nakamoto and Bitcoin’s transformative journey.
