Kabosu: Real Life Shiba Inu Dog Breed Behind Dogecoin Passes Away

Published by

Kabosu, the Shiba Inu dog who inspired Dogecoin and was the face of the “doge” meme, is no more, according to recent reports. On May 24, 2024, the news of Kabosu’s demise took the crypto and meme worlds by storm.

Notably, Atsuko Sato, a Japanese kindergarten teacher and Kabosu’s owner, earlier said in a Dec. 26 Instagram post that the rescue dog was in a “dangerous” state, but assured her followers that the dog would be “absolutely fine” and is “getting power from all over the world” from supporters. However, Kabosu is no more.

Earlier, in a tweet, she said that her beloved pet was in a lot of pain. She added, “Unfortunately, Kabosu doesn’t look so well… I’m sure she’s going to be okay. Definitely okay. She’s receiving power from all over the world! Thank you so much everyone!”

Who was Kabosu? The beloved Shiba Inu Dog That Inspired ‘Dogecoin’

On February 13th, 2010, Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato posted several pictures of Kabosu, her rescue Shiba Inu dog, on her personal blog. Among the images, there was one particular shot of Kabosu sitting on a couch, looking sideways at the camera with arched eyebrows.

This shot of Kobosu quickly became a meme. The meme’s popularity prompted Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer to create what is widely regarded as the first “meme coin,” Dogecoin, in 2013, as a joke.

They launched “Dogecoin” in the Bitcoin Talk Forum, in a thread titled “Dogecoin – very currency – many coin – wow – v1.1 Released,” as a satire of the Bitcoin bubble.

Kobosu, the female dog is quite popular in crypto community,  with Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin also paying a visit to Kabosu and Satō in their Tokyo flat in 2018.

Sato did not reveal what health issues Kabosu is suffering with, but informed in an earlier post that Kabosu has been unwell since Christmas Eve, refusing to eat or drink.

It should be noted that Shiba Inu dogs have an average life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Kabosu celebrated her 17th birthday in 2022.
