AI News: Google DeepMind Experts Plots Breakout for New Venture

Amidst the growing popularity and adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), two scientists from Google DeepMind are considering breaking out to create their own AI firm.

Google DeepMind Experts in Search of Funding

At the moment, these Alphabet Inc. technology experts are engaging investors, telling them about their plans and the modalities to set up an AI firm in Paris.

The scientists are looking at raising to $220 million from the investors to finance the lofty project. One of these Google DeepMind staff is Laurent Sifre who also doubles as a French mathematician. His partner on this project is DeepMind scientist Karl Tuyls.

According to people familiar with the discussion but pleaded to remain anonymous, the new AI firm would be called Holistic. Although there are still speculations, it is believed that the upcoming AI enterprise will focus on designing a new Large Language model (LLM).

As is expected, Google DeepMind has received a resignation notice from both Sifre and Tuyls. Before now, Sifre had spent close to eight years with Google DeepMind. He was an integral part of the 2016 DeepMind research on Go, serving as a co-author.

Tuyls on the other hand, was a researcher in Google DeepMind, who looked into game theory and multi-agent reinforcement learning. This branch of AI takes into cognizance the relationship between autonomous actors, often through video games. Individually, Sifre and Tuyls are regarded as authorities in their fields.

France’s Undiluted Support for AI

It is no surprise the the Google DeepMind scientists chose France as their preferred startup base considering the country’s affinity for technology.

The area is recognized for having venture capitalists and investment angels who are enthusiastic about committing to innovative technology. This was underscored in the financing pumped into startups originating from Parisian universities as well as the AI hubs of Silicon Valley firms.

The tussle for self-sovereignty also disrupted OpenAI which had a leadership tussle in Q3, 2023 which involved the impeachment of its CEO Sam Altman. The leadership debacle led many employees to consider exiting the AI company. Three senior researchers at OpenAI, Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry, and Szymon Sidor, reportedly resigned from the firm at that time.

Unlike for OpenAI whose talent reduction was greatly tied to its leadership saga, no reason has been officially given for Sifre and Tuyls’ exit from Google DeepMind other than for pure ambitions.
