Biden Propels US AI Standards Development Amid EU’s AI Push

The world of artificial intelligence (AI) witnessed a torrent of speculative buzz on Wednesday as the U.S. embarked on its journey to regulate generative AI. U.S. President Joe Biden, with his administration, appears to be setting sights on developing critical standards for the safe deployment of generative AI within the nation.

Moreover, the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) further weighed in on the matter, cracking on ensuring the safety of AI systems. Succeeding Europe’s recent stance on AI regulation, the U.S. now further embarks on its venture to revolutionize AI, as portrayed by the efforts poured in by Biden’s administration.

A Closer Look Into The Report

According to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Biden’s October executive order on AI initially ushered in the endeavor to safely regulate AI within the nation. Moreover, following Biden’s initial order, the current endeavor zeroes in on setting benchmarks for AI safety, security, and trust within the U.S. With this, the administration eyes global leadership in the conscientious advancement and utilization of this rapidly evolving technology.

Meanwhile, as the NIST chimed in, it sought public and industry opinions on AI regulation by February 2, 2024. With this, the commerce institute aims to administer significant testing on AI-related systems to ensure the safety of the entire AI industry on the nation’s horizon.

Furthermore, the agency reportedly appears to be setting its sights on fostering guidelines for evaluating AI and developing standards orbiting AI systems. Notably, Biden’s order asserted agencies to customize standards for testing AI encompassing cybersecurity, nuclear, and radiological risks, among many others.

With this chronicle, the U.S. now appears to be the second major powerhouse, following the EU’s AI chronicle in recent days.

U.S. Joins The Race For AI

Although the U.S. made it pretty clear that the need to regulate AI remains of utmost importance, powerhouses like EU seem to be a step ahead. Notably, Biden’s initial stance on handling AI came forth in October earlier this year. However, the current stance appears to be of greater importance.

Meanwhile, the EU reached a provisional deal for regulating AI earlier this month, leading the race. Additionally, India followed behind as it intensified its focus on AI with the GPAI Summit.
