Accessing the metaverse requires a mixture of specialized hardware (phones, computers, headsets, 3D screens, gloves, etc.) and software (games, programs, etc.). What you would like depends on what exactly you want to do. For instance, to play the foremost popular VR games, you’ll need a VR headset and controllers.

The Metaverse is an “integrated network of 3D virtual worlds”. We will be accessing these worlds via a computer game headset. The users move through the meta-version using eye movements, feedback controls, or voice commands. The headset immerses the user. This then stimulates what’s known as presence, which is made by generating a physical sensation of real presence.

To see meta versions in action, we will look at popular virtual reality games like Rec Room or Horizon Worlds. Here participants use avatars to interact with one another and manipulate their environment.

Broader field

But the broader applications outside of gaming are stunning. Musicians and entertainment labels are experimenting with hosting concerts within the metaverse. The sports industry is following suit. Top franchises like Manchester City building virtual stadiums for fans to watch matches and presumably buy virtual merchandise.

Perhaps the furthest opportunities for meta versions are going to be in online education and government services.

This is the popular notion of a meta version: a VR-based world independent of our physical one. People can socialize and interact in a seemingly limitless variety of virtual experiences. This will be powered by their own digital economy.

While VR is taken into account as a key ingredient in the metaverse recipe, entry into the metaverse isn’t (and should not be) limited to a VR headset. In a sense, anyone with a computer or smartphone can cash in on metaverse experiences like the digital world of Second Life. Offering wide availability is vital to making the metaverse work based on VR’s constant uphill battle for consumer attention.

The VR market has seen remarkable innovation during a short period of time. Some years ago, people curious about home virtual reality had to choose between expensive computer systems that tied users down, or cheap but extremely limited smartphone-based headsets.

Now we have seen the arrival of affordable, ultra-high-quality, portable wireless headsets like Meta’s Quest series, which have quickly become leaders within the home VR market. The graphics are sensational, the content library is more robust than ever, and therefore the device costs less than most video game consoles.

There is no unified metaverse, so each company develops its own platform, headsets, and other technologies. Major players in the market currently are Epic Games, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox Corporation, Decentraland, Unity Software, Snapchat, Meta, NVIDIA, The Sandbox, and Amazon.

The most popular platforms to access the metaverse include Meta, Oculus, Sony, HTC, Pico, Valve, and Samsung.
