Elon Musk is turning to Bitcoin as the encryption standard for the incoming XChat messaging feature. XChat features a boatload of perks to improve user experience, with Musk tipping its security functionality as a game-changer.
As XChat prepares for a commercial rollout, Elon Musk has confirmed new capabilities for the incoming messaging feature. According to an X post, Musk revealed that XChat will prioritize security, borrowing a page from Bitcoin’s playbook.
Musk confirmed that the new messaging feature will lean on a “Bitcoin-style” encryption for advanced security functionality. While not expressly stated, XChat may rely on the SHA-256 encryption standard, and each user is given a public and private key.
To underscore the need for heightened security, Elon Musk disclosed that XChat is built on Rust, a programming language prioritizing security and efficiency.
Outside of its architecture, Musk unveiled additional capabilities for XChat, including audio and video call functionalities. Furthermore, users will enjoy the perks of vanishing messages as an added layer of privacy, competing with Signal and Telegram.
“You can do audio/video calls without a phone number across all platforms,” said Musk.
XChat is currently in beta, and early users appear limited to premium users. Outside of XChat, Elon Musk says no deal has been signed with Telegram Messenger for an xAI integration. The X Messenger will attempt to snag market share from WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram upon its commercial rollout.
Despite Elon Musk’s affinity with Dogecoin, the Tesla CEO remains firmly pro-Bitcoin. Recently, Arkham revealed that Tesla holds $1.25B in Bitcoin, with the electric car maker holding the flagship cryptocurrency since 2021.
Elon Musk has signaled support for the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, with the billionaire present during the signing of the Executive Order.
Bitcoin price reacted to Musk’s X post on encryption standards for XChat to rise by nearly 2% within hours. After Bitcoin crashed by 8% to trade at $103K and threatened to fall below $100K, BTC is now exchanging hands at over $105K.
