Ethereum Fusaka Upgrade, Timeline And Details

According to today’s Ethereum Daily Report, the Fusaka mainnet launch is expected in early November, with public testnet upgrades kicking off in late September. While this upgrade intends to bring more efficiency and scalability, it offers a smooth and reliable user experience.

Notably, CoinGape reported the potential Ethereum Fusaka upgrade in December 2024. As part of the event, Fusaka Devnet 3 is set to launch on June 23, this Wednesday. Client team readiness will determine if the schedule holds. To accelerate testing, the team has removed EIP 7907, and Devnet-3 is scheduled with EIP 7825 updates and engine_getblob API decisions.

However, the Ethereum community member Nixo raised concerns about deploying Fusaka on the mainnet this year. In an X post, he wrote, “If we want to ship by Devconnect, we need our timeline TIGHT. We’ll go over that in detail. Can we get client releases in the ~next month & a half?”

Key Proposals

Notably, the Ethereum Fusaka upgrade follows the most recent and major Pectra upgrade that introduced major network enhancements like smarter wallets, increased staking limits, and cheaper and faster transactions. As CoinGape reported, the Pectra, one of the largest Ethereum upgrades, included 11 EIPs.

Similarly, the Fusaka upgrade features 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Key inclusions are EIP-7594 for Peer Data Availability Sampling, EIP-7825 for capping transaction gas limits, and EIP-7951 for precompiling support for the secp256r1 curve. Additionally, the new proposal EIP-7939 introduces an opcode for counting leading zeros. Despite some procedural irregularities, developers deemed its inclusion beneficial. Other proposals underwent adjustments, including lowering the contract code size limit in EIP-7907 from 256 KB to 48 KB and setting the blob base cost parameter in EIP-7918 at 2^13 following developer debates.

Glamsterdam Upgrade in 2026

Interestingly, the next major upgrade is Glamsterdam, which is expected to take place in 2026. As per the Ethereum Daily report, client teams are showing strong early support for making enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs) the main features of Glamsterdam. While the discussion has already started, a final decision could be made in 2-4 weeks, pending more community input.

Notably, Ethereum core developer Barnabé Monnot proposes cutting block time in half, from 12 to 6 seconds, to enhance user experience and boost DeFi DApp efficiency. Upon approval, this upgrade is slated for implementation through the Glamsterdam hard fork.

In a separate development, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin signaled the network’s decision to increase gas limit capacity. As CoinGape reported, Buterin stated that around 50% of validators are in favor of increasing the Layer 1 gas limit from 37.3M to 45M.
