The recent Discord and Twitter accounts have been linked to a single hacker named “Pink Drainer.” The hacker was behind hijacking the account of OpenAI CTO as well. In the past few weeks, Pink Drainer stole over $3 million from nearly 2000 victims, Scam Sniffer reported.
The latest hack events, including Evomos, Pika Protocol, OpenAI CTO, and Orbiter Finance have all been linked to “Pink Drainer.” The hacker promoted a fake OpenAI token through the OpenAI CTO’s account.
Pink Drainer sent phishing links to victims after the group approached them as journalists from reputed media organizations. As soon as victims clicked on the malicious links and followed the steps further, resulting in the loss of their assets. Through the analysis of stolen funds on Mainnet, Arbitrum, BNB, Polygon, Optimism and Other Chains, the gangs seems to have gotten away with over $3 million from 1,932 victims. The Pink Drainer was first discovered by Twitter user @tayvano_.
As per victims’ account of the hack events, it appears that the access was gained through carefully crafted social engineering attacks that led to Discord token thefts.
Pink Drainer has also been behind several NFT thefts in the last couple of months.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs reported that the industry saw a dramatic drop in the number of hacks in the first quarter of 2023 after the sanctions placed on the crypto mixer Tornado Cash.
As per the report, hackers stole approximately $400 million from crypto projects across 40 attacks, representing a 70% decrease in money stolen compared to the same period in 2022. The report highlighted the industry’s positive trend to legal actions against hackers and last year’s sanctions on Tornado Cash which made it “difficult to launder the proceeds” that led to the change.
