Hollywood Performers Strike AI Protection Deal

According to Reuters, a provisional agreement that includes restrictions against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and rises in minimum salary has been struck by Hollywood actors and media professionals with major record companies, including Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment.

The agreement was unanimously adopted by SAG-AFTRA’s executive committee, which represents around 160,000 actors and other media professionals, and it spans the five years from 2021 to 2026, the organization said in a statement on its website.

AI a Concern for the Entertainment Industry

The AI protection deal comes as the entertainment business has been more concerned with artificial intelligence (AI), and last year, SAG-AFTRA and major studios held discussions about the subject that ultimately resulted in a deal in November following a months-long strike.

The music industry is particularly struggling with songs produced by generative AI, a technique that allows users of the internet to easily replicate the voices of artists, frequently without the artists’ permission.

AI Protection Deal Only A Safeguard

AI has limitless possibilities in the film industry going forward. The technology is finding growing use in virtual filmmaking, where it can help create lifelike virtual surroundings, negating the need for real sets. With its greater creative flexibility and lower production costs, this technology has the potential to completely transform the filmmaking process.

AI-driven narrative development is another promising field. AI might propose plots and genres that are likely to appeal to viewers by analyzing cultural trends and audience preferences. Films that closely match the interests of the audience may become more successful as a result of this predictive storytelling.

With such advancement and a likelihood of dependency, artificial intelligence cannot be restricted in the film industry. However, the AI protection deal would likely aim to safeguard those involved in the industry from being denied credit for their work.
