Japan’s Metaplanet has unveiled an $881 million international stock issuance aimed at acquiring more BTC. The move highlights the company’s goal of becoming a Bitcoin income-generating business.
In its latest release, Metaplanet announced plans to acquire $881 million BTC through the capital raised from its international stock issuance. The firm will issue new shares under an international offering scheduled to be finalized after a shareholder vote on September 1, 2025.
The proposal includes amending the company’s Articles of Incorporation to increase authorized shares. It will also ensure that the fundraising does not exceed approved issuance limits. Should the amendment fail, the company stated the stock sale will still proceed, but within existing share allotments.
The company’s primary objective is to raise significant capital in a short timeframe to expand its BTC net asset value (NAV). By doing so, Metaplanet aims to maximize the token yield and increase the number of coins held per share. As a result, its preferred stock’s intrinsic value would increase and its balance sheet would be strengthened.
Notably, Japan is grappling with rising national debt, prolonged negative real interest rates, and a persistent decline in the value of the yen. Since May 2024, the company has reoriented its treasury strategy to prioritise Bitcoin over fiat reserves in light of this.
By channeling JPY 123.8 billion ($881 million) from the planned issuance into the token purchases, the company aims to shield its reserves from yen depreciation. Following Metaplanet’s recent Bitcoin purchase, it now holds 18,991 BTC. This is valued at JPY 314.6 billion, acquired at an average price of $102,712 per coin.
The investment firm’s recent moves suggest a complete focus on generating Bitcoin income. Unlike traditional reserve assets, BTC does not generate a direct yield. To address this, the firm has been leveraging derivatives markets. They have particularly done this through the sale of put options.
In its Q2 FY2025 report, the company disclosed ¥1.9 billion in revenue from this activity. They also plan to scale it further using ¥6.5 billion from the upcoming issuance. This strategy positions the firm as an active institution in generating crypto-based income.
Furthermore, Michael Saylor’s Strategy also reported a token yield of 25.4% YTD. The firm recently confirmed its fourth consecutive weekly purchase. Strategy added 3,081 BTC for $356.9 million despite the token’s market downturn.
These accumulation moves follow Eric Trump’s bullish predictions for Bitcoin. At a recent conference, Trump stated that he expects Bitcoin to reach $175,000 by the end of 2025, with a long-term target of above $1 million.
With its planned $881 million raise, Metaplanet is pushing to overtake Bullish and Riot Platforms according to the token’s treasury rankings. More importantly, it highlights the accelerating trend of public firms embracing Bitcoin.
