Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has instructed three GOP-led committees to launch an impeachment inquiry into United States President, Joe Biden.
Speaker McCarthy’s proposal for an impeachment investigation is based on his claim that President Biden lied to the American people about his awareness of his family’s international business dealings.
McCarthy and other Republicans have accused Biden of benefitting from his son Hunter’s business operations while serving as Vice President under President Barack Obama.
The impeachment inquiry will be led by GOP Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, Chair of the House Oversight Committee, in coordination with Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, Chair of the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri, Chair of the Ways and Means Committee.
McCarthy’s move to initiate an impeachment inquiry comes amid increasing pressure from right-wing Republicans to take a more aggressive stance against President Biden in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. With a looming government shutdown deadline at the end of the month, McCarthy faces a delicate balancing act to secure support from all factions within his party.
Meanwhile, the White House, through spokesman Ian Sams, has pushed back against the impeachment inquiry, stating that House Republicans have been investigating President Biden for nine months and have failed to uncover any evidence of wrongdoing.
Similarly, Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, has dismissed the GOP’s investigation as a “complete and total bust.” Raskin argues that the evidence gathered so far overwhelmingly demonstrates no wrongdoing by President Biden and debunks what he characterizes as Republican conspiracy theories.
That President Biden is now being closely monitored with a probable impeachment is not a new thing to the American public as former President Donald Trump also faced similar impeachment woes in his time while in office.
At this time, President Trump is still being dragged by the Department of Justice (DoJ) for a series of allegations which has led to his arrest on more than one occasion as reported earlier by Coingape. While the impeachment inquiries are still in its early days, it underscores the nature of Democracy being practiced in the biggest market for digital currency.
