Brakes To Metaverse Plans

The senators said Meta failed to protect children and teens despite growing concerns around threats to the younger folks in virtual reality space. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Democratic senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg asking for suspension of Meta’s plans to release Horizon Worlds to teens. The Meta game is a virtual reality based online game that allows players move and interact with each other in various worlds that host events, games, and social activities.

The development comes after recent reports that Meta was taking steps to crack down on the spread of intimate images of teenagers on Facebook and Instagram. The senators further said,

“In light of your company’s record of failure to protect children and teens and a growing body of evidence pointing to threats to young users in the metaverse, we urge you to halt this plan immediately.”
