Microsoft Hires Sam Altman and Greg Brockman

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took to X on November 20 to officially announce the hiring of former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman. They will lead a new advanced AI research team.

We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.

Nadella said the company remains committed to partnership with OpenAI and has confidence in the product roadmap. He added “our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners.” Microsoft will look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OpenAI’s new leadership team and working with them.

Sam Altman responded to Nadella’s post saying “The mission continues”. Altman had been negotiating to return as OpenAI CEO, but OpenAI’s four-person board refused the negotiations supported by former interim CEO Mira Murati on terms that Altman failed to meet the board’s requirements.

While the future of OpenAI remain a volatile discussion, Sam Altman remain the majority of employees favorite and many stay resolute on their demands that the board has to resign and reinstate the former CEO.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk also replied to Satya Nadella’s post, mocking them for using Microsoft Teams now for video conferencing, meetings, calling, and others. Musk has been recently expanding X features including calling, financial services, and others that will compete with some of Microsoft’s products.
