OpenAI has announced, in a live-streamed event, the launch of GPT-4o, a new improved model that is now available to all ChatGPT users, even those who are on the free plan. This is a break from the past when GPT-4 class models were only available to paying subscribers.

“Everybody who has ChatGPT can use it, no matter the plan, for free! Until now, GPT-4 class models have only been accessible to those who pay a monthly fee, ” said Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI.

OpenAI New GPT-4o and Desktop ChatGPT

GPT-4o is a major step forward in the range of AI models provided by OpenAI. Described as the best model ever by the company, it guarantees faster speeds and better performances in the areas of text, vision, and audio. This model not only adds new features to the existing ChatGPT but also improves the functionality of the current one, for example, it can now listen to the user in real-time and gauge his or her emotion to adjust the responses accordingly.

Besides, OpenAI also announced the release of a new desktop version of ChatGPT that will be used to make AI more integrated in daily computing tasks. This version will allow the users to interact with ChatGPT more easily, they will be able to ask questions or command tasks by using the keyboard shortcuts.

The desktop app is first available for macOS users, with a Windows version to be released later in this year. This step is anticipated to be useful for a wider audience as it will improve the accessibility and user experience on personal computers.

Enhanced Features and Multilingual Support

Besides, the most important improvement is the enlargement of ChatGPT’s communication skills. The new GPT-4o model is equipped with the latest voice and video features which can interpret and respond to the users in real time.

“Real-time voice and video is so life-like that it is difficult to convey it just by tweeting. We will start it in the next few weeks,” Altman added.

This feature is scheduled to be released to the ChatGPT Plus users in the alpha version in the next few weeks and it is designed to make the interaction with the AI more dynamic and natural than ever before. Furthermore, GPT-4o enhances the multilingual performance and has a better quality and speed for 50 different languages which means it is a more inclusive tool that is for a global audience.

The improvements are not limited to the user interface, but they also include the API, which is now more efficient for developers to build applications using GPT-4o. OpenAI has revealed that the new API is twice as fast as GPT-4 Turbo and at the same time, and at half the cost, which can have a great effect on the development and implementation of AI-based applications in different industries.

Market Impact and Prospects

The introduction of GPT-4o and the enhancements of ChatGPT are happening at a period of tough competition and the pace of development in the AI industry.

OpenAI’s announcements are regarded as a strategic step to expand in the generative AI market, a field that has lately received a lot of attention and investment.

With rivals such as Anthropic and tech giants like Microsoft and Google always trying to break new ground, the latest products of OpenAI will surely be the ones that will set new standards of user interaction with AI technologies.
