OpenAI’s Stance on Fair Use and AI Development
OpenAI maintains that for AI to evolve and address new challenges, it requires access to a vast array of human knowledge. This stance is rooted in the belief that using internet data for training AI models constitutes fair use. This principle allows for the repurposing of copyrighted materials within certain limits. The company highlighted its recent action of disabling the Browse feature in ChatGPT, which inadvertently led to content reproduction. Additionally, since August 2023, website owners have had the option to block OpenAI’s web crawlers, preventing their data from being used in the company’s model training.
