Shutterstock Generative AI Image Tool Launch; Is This Death Of Stock Photography?

Shutterstock has released a text-to-image generator based on OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 engine for its platform. In contrast to the rival AI model Stable Diffusion, the new synthetic media service is custom-trained on the Shutterstock image library, with royalties paid to the artists whose work was used in the process.

Shutterstock claims in the announcement that the pictures are “ethically created” and “larger-than-life.” In other words, unless AI goes rogue and starts generating nudes, it will abide by the platform’s Terms of Use. The tool makes use of text-to-image technology, with which most of us are already familiar. Users can think of anything, and type commands to the AI, and the AI will create the image for users.

Shutterstock AI generator works on a learning algorithm

The deep learning algorithm that supports the AI art generator produces images that are similar to the input by using images as input. After that, the user can choose a generated image and grant permission for its use.

The announcement from Shutterstock comes at a time when AI is increasingly being used to produce art. Numerous AI startups last year released tools to create realistic images, including OpenAI, StabilityAI, and Midjourney.

Is this death of stock photography?

AI is pretty good at creating all different kinds of scenes, including nature, cities, animals, and common objects. Is it still worthwhile for photographers to capture and market these images if anyone can produce them in a matter of seconds? It is difficult to determine.

Contrarily, users are aware that images with people in them are the most popular ones on stock websites. AI still has trouble producing realistic images of people. But there’s no doubt that the AI-created portraits that some photographers have been experimenting with are getting better. Will stock photography have served its purpose once they are without a doubt credible? Time will only tell.
