Play-to-Earn games have stumbled time and again because token rewards took center stage while gameplay became an afterthought. At its peak, Axie Infinity drew in millions of players worldwide, yet a market crash, a major hack, and runaway token inflation wiped out over 90% of its user base. Critics were quick to point out that Axie’s model depended on a constant influx of new players to sustain token value, a structure that looked more like a Ponzi scheme than a game.
Now, a new challenger is rewriting the script.
Pikamoon, an upcoming AAA Play-to-Earn (P2E) title, has set out to design a sustainable long-term ecosystem where fun, skill, and community drive the economy, not speculation alone. As the Pikamoon manifesto puts it, the team is building a “game-first universe” where players’ time, strategy, and social coordination are genuinely rewarded.
Let’s explore how Pikamoon plans to fix the long-term sustainability problem that has haunted P2E from the start.
Pikamoon emphasizes fun and fairness above all else. Its design pillars state bluntly that “Fun > Everything. If it isn’t fun for a Web2 gamer with zero crypto, it doesn’t ship.” In practice this means Pikamoon is free-to-play (no NFT purchase necessary to start playing), and non-crypto gamers should find it approachable.
As such, the upcoming play-to-earn title, PikaRoyale, is a melee-focused battle royale built on Unity 6, with close-quarters action and AI “Pikamoon” companions adding strategy. Players loot weapons and Pikamoons, then fight in a shrinking BR arena, but success depends on player skill and tactics, not idle grinding.
Competitive ladders, ranked seasons, and tournaments will reward the most skilled and active players, not the ones with the deepest pockets.
Importantly, Pikamoon rejects pay-to-win. The team vows there will be “no pay-to-win cultures” that push out real gamers. Instead, in-game purchases are mostly cosmetic or convenience (skins, vanity items, entry fees) for show-offs, while actual power comes from practice and teamwork.
Behind the scenes, Pikamoon’s $PIKA token economy is built to avoid inflationary spirals. Unlike older P2E games that printed rewards unchecked, Pikamoon uses measured emissions and plenty of “sinks” to anchor value. For example, $PIKA will be used for seasonal passes, cosmetic upgrades, crafting materials, tournament fees, etc. Specifically, every token “faucet” will be paired with a user. The manifesto promises “real sinks” such as cosmetic prestige, limited drops, upgrade paths, and event tickets, so tokens have constant utility inside the game rather than being cashed out immediately.
As a result, the game will have a sustainable loop where players earn rewards by playing well, but they continuously reinvest value into the game world, rather than simply cashing out. This is then reinforced by Pikamoon’s deflationary mechanisms. For instance, the recent move to Solana was explicitly pitched as an upgrade for “Pikaverse 2.0” that led to a burn of all the unabridged tokens.
According to the team, recent migration to Solana, along with past burns, has so far permanently removed nearly 12% of the total capped supply from circulation forever. On top of that, team tokens that comprise nearly 4.1 billion $PIKA have been locked for 5 years.
In practice, this means $PIKA avoids “empty emissions.” Tokens aren’t just a lifeline for speculation but a carefully balanced tool that drives engagement, scarcity, and lasting value for both gamers and investors. Or in other words, rewards are tied to active game modes and tournaments, so if growth slows, the token outflow automatically tightens.
Pikamoon is not just a single game release but a multi-year ecosystem. Starting with the PikaRoyale battle royale, the roadmap extends well into 2030 with new modes, expansions, and constant updates. According to the public roadmap, an alpha test of PikaRoyale is expected in late 2025, with a full AAA launch on PC in 2026.
But Pikamoon’s sights are set further.
The developers plan a vast open-world RPG that will let players explore Dreva’s zones, tame creatures, and follow a story-driven campaign. By 2030 players can expect new game modes, seasonal trials, open-world expansion, and a story-driven campaign, making Pikamoon a multi-year ecosystem. In addition, seasonal trial events (time-limited challenges), cross-server competitions, and regular content drops will keep the gameplay evolving.
To maximize longevity, Pikamoon will be everywhere gamers play. After its initial PC launch on Steam/Epic, Pikamoon will arrive on consoles about a year later. The roadmap targets a December 2027 release on PlayStation and Xbox. Crossplay is built in because PC and console users will be able to fight in the same matches and even share accounts, uniting the community.
By mid-2028 Pikamoon moves into cloud and mobile through integrations with services like xCloud and GeForce Now that will let anyone with a basic device stream the game, and a companion mobile app will keep guilds and inventories accessible on the go.
Importantly, each new platform rollout brings fresh content and live ops. The team plans season passes with new challenges and rewards every few months, plus themed cosmetic drops, tournaments, and creator-led events to maintain engagement. This live-service approach contrasts sharply with earlier P2E games that launched one mode and moved on. Instead, Pikamoon’s developers stress “sustainable loops”: each season’s faucets (rewards) are balanced by sinks, and every update gives players new goals.
Pikamoon’s biggest milestones are just around the corner, with the $PIKA relaunch date now officially announced. To make sure you don’t miss out, join the official Telegram and follow @PikamoonGame on X, where the team shares regular updates, dev diaries, and exclusive teasers. This is where early believers are already gathering, and it’s the best place to stay ahead of every new reveal.
By learning from past mistakes and committing to a long-term roadmap, Pikamoon aims to prove that Play-to-Earn games can be sustainable and, most importantly, genuinely fun.
