White House Adviser Kevin Hassett has commented on the Federal Court’s ruling against the Trump tariffs, citing an overreach by the US president. Hassett believes that the decision will be overturned following the Trump administration’s decision to file an appeal. Meanwhile, Bloomberg revealed that the US has said that it may take the case to the Supreme Court by tomorrow, May 30.
During a Fox Business interview, the White House Adviser dismissed the US Federal court’s ruling, which rejected Trump’s authority to impose the reciprocal tariffs on April 2. Hassett said that the US government would win on appeal, while he plans to forge ahead with trade negotiations.
According to a Bloomberg report, the administration has stated that in the absence of at least an interim relief from this appeal court, it plans to seek emergency relief from the Supreme Court on May 30.
As CoinGape reported, the US Trade Court ruled that the Trump tariffs are an overstep beyond the president’s authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
During the interview, Hassett also revealed that the trade negotiations have been highly effective for the American people and that they are close to finalizing three trade deals. He added that it is unfortunate that people continue to attack the tariffs, including the judges, whom he described as “activists.”
Meanwhile, he expects more trade deals to follow despite the court’s ruling and assured that the ruling won’t affect ongoing negotiations. CoinGape reported that the EU has set a meeting with the US to avoid the 50% tariffs that President Donald Trump proposed on goods from the region.
Meanwhile, as reporter Walter Bloomberg revealed in an X post, the India Trade Ministry confirmed that talks with the US are progressing well and that they expect a good outcome soon. Walter also revealed in another X post that the US trade team will be visiting India between June 5 and 6.
Walter also cited China’s comments on the US trade court ruling. Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian praised the court’s ruling and urged the US to scrap the Trump tariffs entirely.
He Yongqian remarked that trade wars have no winners and that they only harm global trade and US consumers. The spokeswoman also described the tariffs as “misguided” and “unilateral.”
In an address before Canada’s parliament, Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the US court ruling against the Trump tariffs. The US tariffs on imports from Canada are currently 25%, which Carney has been vocal against since he became the prime minister.
Market expert Anthony Scaramucci, who was once a White House communications director in Trump’s first term as president, also commented on the ruling. He noted that it is not clear when and how the tariff collections would grind to a halt, especially since the government has appealed the ruling.
