Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and imitate their actions. The term can also be used for any machine that exhibits characteristics associated with the human mind, such as learning and problem-solving.
The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and perform actions that have the greatest chance of achieving a specific goal. A subset of artificial intelligence is machine learning (ML), which refers to the concept that computer programs can automatically learn and adapt to new data without human assistance. Deep learning techniques enable this automatic learning through the absorption of vast amounts of unstructured data such as text, images, or video.
The applications for artificial intelligence are endless. This technology can be used in many different sectors and industries. Artificial intelligence is being tested and used in the healthcare industry to dispense drugs provide different treatments tailored to specific patients and assist with surgical procedures in the operating room.
Other examples of AI machines include chess-playing computers and self-driving cars. Each of these machines must consider the consequences of any action they take, as each action will affect the outcome. In chess, the result is winning the game. In self-driving cars, the computer system must take all external data into account and calculate it to behave in a way that avoids a collision.
AI also has applications in the financial industry, where it is used to detect and flag activities in banking and finance, such as the unusual use of debit cards and large account deposits – all of which help a bank’s fraud department. Artificial intelligence applications are also being used to help make trading more efficient and easier. This is achieved by making the supply, demand, and price of securities easier to estimate.
Artificial intelligence has been under the scrutiny of scientists and the public since its inception. One common theme is the idea that machines will be so highly developed that humans will be unable to keep up and will take off on their own, transforming themselves at an exponential rate.
Another is that machines can invade people’s privacy and even become weapons. Other arguments discuss the ethics of artificial intelligence and whether intelligent systems such as robots should be treated with the same rights as humans. Self-driving cars have been quite controversial because their machines tend to be designed for the lowest possible risk and the least possible casualties. If presented with a collision scenario with one person or another at the same time, these cars would calculate the option that would cause the least damage.
Another contentious issue many people have with AI is how it might affect human employment. With many industries looking to automate certain jobs with intelligent machines, there is concern that people will be pushed out of the workforce. Self-driving cars can eliminate the need for taxis and car-sharing programs, while manufacturers can easily replace human labor with machines, making people’s skills obsolete.
