Overview
Bitcoin is back above $70,000, putting it within striking distance of a key prediction-market target.
Polymarket currently gives Bitcoin a 91% chance of reaching $72,500 before the end of August, compared with 9% for No. The market has recorded about $481,733 in 24-hour volume, with roughly $32,075 in liquidity. It is scheduled to resolve on September 1.
With BTC already trading above $71,000, the cryptocurrency needs only a relatively small move higher to settle the market in favor of Yes.
Bitcoin Reclaims $70,000
Bitcoin’s recovery has been quick. After struggling through much of August, BTC broke above $68,000 and then pushed through $70,000, reaching its highest level in roughly two months.
The move has changed the setup for the $72,500 prediction market. Bitcoin no longer needs a major breakout to reach the target. Another strong trading session could be enough.
That is a sharp turnaround from earlier in the month, when prediction markets were focused on whether BTC could hold key downside levels. CoinGape’s recent Bitcoin $62,500 prediction market analysis showed traders heavily favoring a dip to that level while BTC was still trading near $64,500.
The latest rally has also come with a sharp increase in activity across the derivatives market, giving the move additional momentum.
Short Sellers Fuel the Rally
One of the biggest drivers has been the liquidation of bearish positions. CoinGlass liquidation data shows the scale of forced closures across crypto derivatives markets. More than $2.7 billion in crypto short positions were reportedly liquidated during the latest rally.
The mechanics are fairly simple. When Bitcoin rises, traders betting against it begin taking losses. Once their positions hit liquidation levels, they are automatically closed, creating additional buying pressure.
That can turn a normal rally into something much faster.
It also comes with a warning. Once most of the forced buying is over, Bitcoin can lose some of that momentum. A rally powered heavily by short covering is not necessarily the same thing as sustained spot demand.
That is why the latest ETF data matters.
Bitcoin ETF Inflows Pick Up
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $517.2 million in net inflows on August 19, their strongest single-day inflow in roughly three months. BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for the largest share, attracting around $284.7 million.
The latest figure followed another two strong sessions. Spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $297.6 million on August 17 and $189.3 million on August 18, bringing August’s cumulative inflows close to $1 billion at the time.
That gives the current rally a stronger foundation.
If Bitcoin were rising solely because short sellers were being squeezed, there would be a greater risk of the move fading once those positions disappeared. Continued ETF buying suggests investors are also putting fresh capital into the market.
The CoinGlass Bitcoin ETF tracker provides a useful view of those flows as the market approaches the $72,500 level.
The shift is particularly notable when compared with the $67,500 Bitcoin prediction market analysis piece, published when Polymarket traders had pushed the odds of reaching that level down to just 27%. At the time, weak ETF flows were one of the main obstacles for Bitcoin bulls.
Liquidity Adds Another Tailwind
The broader market backdrop has also become more supportive.
The U.S. Treasury announced plans to increase long-term bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion. The move helped push long-term Treasury yields lower and improved sentiment across risk assets.
Bitcoin responded by moving above $70,000.
For Bitcoin, that matters because the cryptocurrency remains sensitive to liquidity and interest-rate expectations.
The next major test will be whether the improved risk appetite can persist. Any sudden shift in expectations around Federal Reserve policy could bring volatility back into the market.
That risk was more visible earlier in August. Recent analysis of the $60,000 Bitcoin prediction market noted that traders were still watching ETF flows and macro conditions closely as BTC traded around $65,200.
Can Bitcoin Reach $72,500?
At this point, the target looks achievable.
Bitcoin only needs to gain around 2% from the $71,000 area to reach $72,500. It has already moved much more than that during the latest rally, while ETF demand and short liquidations are both providing additional support.
There is still a risk of a pullback. Bitcoin’s recent move has been fast, and traders who bought the dip may decide to take profits after the move above $70,000.
A rejection around $72,000-$73,000 would therefore be an important test for the bulls.
But the prediction market does not require Bitcoin to stay above $72,500. It only needs the cryptocurrency to reach the level before the market resolves.
That distinction makes the 91% Yes probability easier to understand.
Bitcoin $72,500 Prediction: What Are the Odds?
Polymarket traders are clearly leaning bullish, and the recent market action gives them a reasonable basis for that view.
Bitcoin has reclaimed $70,000, billions of dollars in short positions have been liquidated, and spot ETF inflows have returned in a meaningful way. The cryptocurrency is also close enough to $72,500 that it does not need another major rally to get there.
The biggest risk is that the current momentum fades before BTC makes the final push.
For now, however, the setup remains favorable. Bitcoin is already knocking on the door of $72,500, and another modest move higher could be enough to settle the market in favor of Yes.
