Just two days after Twitter unveiled the feature to add NFTs to one’s profile picture, another social media giant Reddit is reportedly making a similar move. As per the report, Reddit is testing a feature that allows its users to set any NFT as their own profile picture.

Note that this is different from its Ethereum-based NFTs dubbed CryptoSnoop released last year. However, the engineers at Reddit haven’t yet decided on how Reddit’s support for NFTs would work.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Reddit said that the NFT testing is in the very early stage and isn’t available yet to public users. Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt said:

“We’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership. It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

Reddit’s Push for NFTs

Reddit has been undertaking different NFT initiatives for a while. The social media platform has also set up a dedicated page for NFT-related activities which is nft.reddit.com.

Currently, the NFT domain only focuses on CryptoSnoos featuring Reddit’s own digital collectibles. The “Snoo” basically represents Reddit’s own Aliem mascot and the collectibles are nothing but variations of Snoo’s images.

However, developer Nima Owji was the first to spot this new NFT test. The developer found a banner referencing the project on the Reddit app. Owji speculates that this image could represent Reddit’s expansion beyond CryptoSnoos.

Developer Owji also found out references in Reddit’s code in what seemingly appeared to be a test collection of NFTs on OpenSea. They appeared on the Ethereum test network Rinkeby, a platform that supports running blockchain experiments.

However, some Redditors aren’t happy with Reddit making a move into NFTs. These players have also expressed displeasure on Reddit forums.
