Highlights

  • Arthur Hayes advised ZEC holders to move their coins to a non-custodial wallet and shield it.
  • This comes as the privacy narrative heats up in the crypto space.
  • The Winklevoss Twins are backing a Zcash treasury company in the push for crypto privacy.

Arthur Hayes, Co-founder of the renowned crypto exchange Bitmex, has urged all ZEC holders to move their stash to a decentralized wallet. Hayes’ advice comes at a time when the privacy sector is once again gaining momentum as more members of the crypto community advocate for privacy.

Arthur Hayes Warns ZEC Holders To Shield Tokens

Arthur Hayes, in a recent X post, has advised all Zcash holders to migrate their tokens from centralized exchanges to non-custodial wallets and shield them  The Zcash network operates on a privacy model that supports two types of addresses: transparent addresses and shielded addresses  Transparent addresses, such as the name, infer functions similar to public addresses; however, shielded addresses utilize a cryptographic proof system known as ZK-Snark.

This proof system enables users to conduct private and anonymous transactions by obscuring the identities of both the sender and the receiver. However, centralized exchanges only support transparent address versions; thus, all transactions are fully traceable, which robs users of the ability to use what ZEC is primarily designed to provide: privacy.

It is worth mentioning that Hayes is one of those betting big on ZEC. The BitMEX co-founder revealed that the privacy token is his fund’s second-largest liquid holding after Bitcoin. He has also predicted that the token could reach $10,000 amid its monstrous rally over the last two months.

The Push For Crypto Privacy

Like Arthur Hayes, Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z crypto also posted on X that there is an increased need for privacy as crypto reaches a more mainstream audience  In the x update, a16z crypto posted an image that shows notable privacy developments in 2025 involving Zcash, reinforcing its Zashi wallet with privacy-preserving cross-chain swaps.

Furthermore, in another update, Gemini co-founder Tyler Winklevoss praised the Zcash network, stating that privacy is a rare commodity as our lives have increasingly moved online  He also announced the launch of Cypherpunk, a company dedicated to privacy and sovereignty  He added that the company will begin accumulating ZEC tokens at a massive rate, aiming to own at least 5% of its total supply, and already owns over 203,000 tokens.

Developer Mert stated that he expects the ZEC treasury company to have a higher mnav and buy pressure as a privacy coin digital asset treasury since it is not legal to hold privacy coins in many regions. He also expects a Zcash ETF to launch soon enough. Mert further declared that shielded/unshielded will act as a Trojan horse for privacy at a planetary scale.
