The traffic to ChatGPT, the consumer AI app with the greatest global growth, fell 9.7% in June compared to May, the first monthly decline since the app’s inception. The artificial intelligence (AI) sensation continues to be the most popular chatbot in the world, well outpacing Google Bard and Microsoft’s Bing.
In the US, where the chatbot’s traffic dropped by 10.3% month over month, the decline was much more significant. Additionally, from one month earlier, ChatGPT’s unique visitors decreased by 5.7% in June.
Still The Best In the Market?
Since the chatbot’s launch in late November of last year, this is the first month in which traffic has decreased. Even if traffic were to decrease from here, ChatGPT’s rise would still be outstanding. According to data from Similarweb, the website used to access the chatbot continues to be one of the most popular in the entire world, receiving more than 1.5 billion visitors monthly. The service became one of the fastest to reach 100 million active users within two months after its introduction.
A rise in interest in generative artificial intelligence (AI) solutions that train on text, photos, and videos in a brute-force fashion to produce content has also been attributed to the debut of ChatGPT and its quick success. The chatbot makes use of a language model to produce responses that resemble those of a human being based on word associations it has discovered by analyzing content obtained online or in other texts.
Is This Beginning Of The End?
ChatGPT has received a lot of backlash for its running cost and the freshwater used in running it. The current slowdown in growth may help manage operating costs for ChatGPT, which uses a lot of processing capacity to respond to requests. The cost of maintaining the services has been called “eye-watering” by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
This year, OpenAI expects to earn $200 million in income. In addition to ChatGPT, it generates revenue by directly charging developers and businesses for access to its AI models via an API and through a collaboration with Microsoft, which gave the business over $10 billion.
