Though the creation of Bitcoin is a mystery till today, the Bitcoin logo’s creation and development is very well-known to the Bitcoin maximalists.

The current logo of Bitcoin, an appealing B inside of a bright orange circle, shares an interesting journey before reaching this version. If you have ever observed the Bitcoin logo and wondered who had the privileged responsibility of designing it, then this article is for you.

Let us dig the internet deeper and find out everything about the Bitcoin logo in this article.

The First Bitcoin Logo

By now, many people across the world know the name “Satoshi Nakamoto” as the founder of Bitcoin even though no one knows who they are. Nakamoto is not only the developer of the Bitcoin network but also the creator of the first version of the Bitcoin logo.

First Bitcoin Logo

The initial version represented a gold coin with letters BC on it. Thus, referring to Bitcoin as the ‘Digital Gold’ is not something that started after people began using it as a store of value. It started in the early days of Bitcoin with its logo. Coming to the design part, it seems Nakamoto used the skeuomorphism design philosophy, in which digital symbols represent their physical counterparts. Back in the time of Bitcoin creation, this design philosophy was in trend.

The Updated Version of the Bitcoin Logo

When the BitcoinTalk Forum launched in 2010, the community members started giving suggestions to modify the logo. One user proposed the community to accept Thai baht currency symbol ฿ as Bitcoin’s logo but others opposed it saying it leads to confusion. Since Bitcoin is all about decentralization, community members raised their voices and added their suggestions.

Second version of Bitcoin Logo

In February 2010, Nakamoto changed the logo and created a gold coin with B embossed on it. Nakamoto considered the community feedback and made changes to the logo. This letter had two vertical lines popping out from the top and bottom instead of completely crossing the letter.

With the new Bitcoin logo Nakamoto combined the two most popular financial assets in the world – gold and the US dollar. Gold, because the symbol is in the form of gold coin and Dollar, because of the two new vertical lines on the top and bottom of B in the Bitcoin’s logo.

The Current Bitcoin Logo

Nakamoto’s updated logo version got mixed reactions from the community members. Some people even mentioned that it lacked professional polish.

Since Bitcoin is decentralized and community-based, anyone can design a logo. On November 1, 2010, a pseudonymous person with the name bitboy released a new version of the Bitcoin logo. Please note that the popular YouTuber BitBoy Crypto and the logo designer bitboy are not the same.

New Bitcoin Logo

In this version, bitboy replaced the gold coin with an orange circle and placed a white ₿ inside of it by titling it to 14° clockwise. They released copyright-free images and stated that anyone can make use of the graphics freely even for commercial purposes. After gathering enormous support from the community members, this version of the logo remained the official Bitcoin logo for more than a decade now.

Time For a Change?

Several Bitcoin enthusiasts and community members are continuing to create new versions of the logo but none of them could replace the current version.

Some group of people suggested that Bitcoin needs a symbol like the currency symbols we have today, not a logo. Because Bitcoin is neither a brand nor a product or a company to have a logo. Other people wanted to straighten the logo keeping everything the same. However, arguments like these faded out as the time passed and bitboy’s design remained the Bitcoin logo.

With the continuous developments and innovations like Ordinals protocol and BRC-20 token standard, Bitcoin is supporting fungible and non-fungible token creation on the network. With the changing use cases, do you think it is time to change the Bitcoin logo?
