Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up,” these words of Charlie Munger, the second-in-command to Warren Buffett, paint a big picture of him in our head. However, the man in the real world has an even bigger stature. The giant investor is in charge of ‘the world’s greatest compound interest machine’ Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate worth around $354.6 billion. Even after being an influential person in the world of investment, Munger is highly skeptical about investment in Bitcoin. He often takes the opportunity to express his volatile thoughts toward virtual currency.
Besides Berkshire, the philanthropist plays an important role in multiple other businesses. Furthermore, the man has an eventful past with a diversified history of being a trained meteorologist during World War II and a lawyer at Harvard. However, this is a fraction of his interest in various disciplines. Here, we try to shed some light on the lift of Charlie ‘Charles’ Munger.
Born in 1924, Charlie Munger has been associated with Warren Buffett’s family in the past. He spent a part of his teenage years working at Buffett & Son, a grocery store with its ownership in the hands of Warren’s grandfather.
A few years down the line, during World War II, Munger was admitted to the University of Michigan. This is where he enhanced his knowledge of mathematics. However, dropped out of college in 1943. Following this, he was admitted to the U.S. Army Air Corps. During this time, he was trained in meteorology and later was adorned with a promotion to become second lieutenant. Later on, he continued to enhance his knowledge of the science of meteorology at Caltech in Pasadena, California.
After getting an undergraduate degree, he earned a degree in Law from Harvard Law School in 1948. As a real estate attorney, Charlie founded Munger, Tolles & Olson, a renowned law firm in California.
Munger’s life transformed after he transitioned from law to finance. His journey in the world of finance began at a dinner meeting in Omaha in 1959. This was the place where he met Warren Buffet and, over the years, began building his investment firm as a real estate attorney.
Things escalated after Munger gave up life as a law practitioner on Buffett’s advice. This end marked the beginning of his time managing investments. He also ran his investment firm before becoming a part of Berkshire.
Charlie Munger is one of the very active investors with a net worth of $2.5 billion as of 30 October 2023, according to Forbes. This gives 1224th position in the list of billionaires around the globe.
Born Alfren Munger and Florence Munger in Omaha, Charlie was married twice and has 8 children. The names of his children are Jr., Molly Munger, Charles T. Munger, Emilie Munger Ogden, Wendy Munger, Philip R. Munger, and Barry A. Munger.
The investment genius’ skepticism towards Bitcoin is well-known. At a shareholder meeting in 2021, talking about the same he said it was “created out of thin air.” His opinions about the virtual form of currency have not changed over the years. As per CNBC’s report, Munger called cryptocurrency “worthless” during a shareholder meeting of Daily Journal Corporation. The Berkshire vice president even went as far as calling Bitcoin the “stupidest investment.”
Charlie Munger is an avid reader and a firm believer in gaining knowledge from books. He even advises people to read and shared a list of his favourite books. His favourite subjects include multiple streams, from psychology to history and science. Known for his wit and wisdom, the investor has a long-term perspective evident from his investment decisions.
