LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman on Wednesday criticized Tesla CEO Elon Musk for his stance on the artificial intelligence technology. His criticism followed an open letter by AI experts and many executives including Musk last week about the risks to society from the technology. In the letter, the experts called for imposing a six month pause in developing systems powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4. Essentially, they asked developers to temporarily stop the process of training powerful AI models.

Musk had in the recent times been critical of ChatGPT and OpenAI’s style of operation. He wondered how the company could transition into a “closed source, maximum-profit company” from being a non-profit entity. The billionaire also said OpenAI was effectively controlled by Microsoft, referring to the tech giant’s investment in the ChatGPT maker.

Reid Hoffman Criticizes Elon Musk

Reacting to the open letter appeal to halt AI project development, Reif Hoffman alleged Musk of having an unfair attitude towards the progress of the technology. Speaking to CNBC, he said,

“Elon Musk tends to have the ‘I must build it with my own hands. It’s only great if I do it’ attitude.”

However, Hoffman said the business side of AI projects is still under progress. OpenAI’s focus has been to provide high quality services with a lot of safety and alignment, he explained.
