Prepare for the ‘Scourge’, A New Stage in Updated Ethereum Roadmap
Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin shared an updated roadmap for network upgrades in a technical infographic recently. This roadmap intends to increase censorship resistance and decentralization of the Ethereum network.

To mention a few, it includes an addition to the verge—a new milestone for the merge—and the creation of a brand-new stage dubbed the scourge.
Scourge
Following the switch to a proof-of-stake (PoS) network on September 15, Ethereum has been in the Surge stage, with the objective of reaching 100,000 transactions per second through rollups.
The Scourge is now the third stage on the updated technological roadmap. And it will be followed by the previously known stages — the Verge, the Purge, and the Splurge.
Buterin stated that the scourge’s purpose is to “provide reliable and fair credibly neutral transaction inclusion, and tackle MEV issues.”
Big changes:
* The Verge✅ is not just about "verkle trees", it's about "verification". Endgame: fully SNARKed ethereum
* The Scourge🧟(new): ensure reliable and fair credibly neutral transaction inclusion, solve MEV issues
* Single slot finality as stage 2 Merge🐼 milestone— vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) November 4, 2022

MEV is referred to as an “invisible tax” that miners can collect from users – essentially, the maximum value a miner can extract from moving around transactions when producing a block on a blockchain network.
This enables miners to duplicate all successful deals from the mempool and execute their transactions ahead of arbitrage seekers or anybody else seeking profit.
As a result of the Merge, Ethereum has become associated with more centralization and censorship.
The scourge’s goal is to keep transactions neutral and to minimise centralization. It may also include Proposer Builder Separation (PBS), in-protocol pre-confirmations, and frontrunning safeguards.
Ethereum developers are updating the network’s roadmap and evaluating potential upgrades.
