Vitalik Buterin Unveils Plans To Scale Ethereum 10X In A Year
Highlights
- Vitalik Buterin has hinted at plans to scale Ethereum by ten times over a year.
- Buterin is pushing for a slow-and-steady approach toward scaling.
- Demands to scale Ethereum's layer 1 have intensified in recent weeks.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, has announced plans to scale Ethereum’s layer 1 by 10 times in approximately a year, without compromising the network’s decentralization. This move aims to enhance Ethereum’s scalability while maintaining its core principles.
Vitalik Buterin Confirms Ethereum Layer 1 Scaling Plans
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has provided clarity for the short-term future of Ethereum, hinting at a wholesale implementation of scalability plans. Buterin confirmed the plans at a panel discussion at ETHGlobal Prague, unveiling L1 scaling ambitions.
Buterin revealed that he will back a plan to scale Ethereum’s layer 1 by 10X “over the next year and a bit.” While scaling the L1 within a year is an ideal timeline, Buterin expressed concerns over a frenzied approach toward scaling.
He argues that scaling the L1 in a little over a year offers an ideal alternative for the network. Buterin’s proposed timeline factors in delayed execution and networking level improvements required to make the leap toward 10x scaling.
Vitalik Buterin adds that the extended timeline will allow Ethereum to keep an eye on decentralization metrics. Furthermore, he adds that the development team will use the additional time to tie up any loose ends, double-check censorship resistance, and possibly EVM improvements.
“At that point it will be a good time to take a breather and have a period to verify that we are doing okay on decentralization properties,” said Buterin.
Buterin has previously backed the use of stateless nodes for Ethereum scaling to maintain user privacy and network decentralization.
Calls For L1 Scaling Have Reached Frenzied Levels
After a dismal Q1 marred by falling ETH prices and on-chain metrics, several key opinion leaders have amplified calls for an immediate L1 scaling. Top Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist stated that the network is in grave danger if it fails to scale 100X in five years.
Dankrad Feist argues that Ethereum will still maintain its privacy and decentralized perk even if its adopts a 100X L1 scaling strategy. Feist notes that committing to his proposal is the strongest statement of intent for the network facing a wave of challenges.
However, Vitalik Buterin disagrees with Feist’s position, stating that taking a breather offers the best upside to scaling safely. While institutional interest in Ethereum has fallen, recent conversations for L1 scaling are stoking enthusiasm among corporates. SharpLink Gaming is raising $2B to buy Ethereum with BTSC and ETFs, increasing their holdings.
As the conversation for Ethereum scaling heats up, ETH is targeting $3,000 to erase the negative numbers from Q1 2025.
