Ripple News: XRP Ledger Moves To Launch New Upgrade This Week

Highlights

  • There is a critical software deadline for XRPL operators on the 27th of May.
  • Old versions of nodes can be amendment blocked.
  • XRP holders will have no action to take.

The XRP Ledger community is nearing an important upgrade deadline, per latest Ripple news updates. The activation window for v3.1.3 expires on May 27, so validators, exchanges, NFT platforms and node operators need to upgrade to v3.1.3 in time.

Ripple News: XRP Ledger Community Gears Up For New Upgrade

Older servers may end up being amendment blocked after the new XRP Ledger upgrade kicks in. This can cause affected nodes to not synchronize with the network, or to process transactions incorrectly.

The infrastructure providers were asked to upgrade as soon as possible by XRP Ledger validator Vet. At the time of the warning, many operators were still lagging in upgrades, he added.

The amendment system of XRPL is responsible for the addition of changes to the blockchain. At least 80% of the trusted validators need to support amendments for two consecutive weeks prior to their activation.

When activated, servers that have been outdated are unable to keep up with the current network rules. Those servers will automatically be excluded and will be excluded as long as compatible software is not installed.

Only approximately 40% of the network has received the update, Vet said when posting the alert. It may only take a few minutes for prepared operators, he said in the Ripple news today.

The XRP Ledger Foundation and community have been working with exchanges and infrastructure providers to enhance readiness. Smaller projects were also requested to verify that they have current software for their back end systems.

The warning is not applicable to normal holders of XRP. Users do not need to move funds or update wallets because of the amendment process.

This risk only applies to platforms and services that are outdated and run XRPL on old infrastructure, according to Ripple news reports. Exchanges or apps that don’t upgrade may experience temporary service interruptions to deposits, withdrawals, trading services and monitoring of the ledger.

Crucial Deadline Is Approaching

Those who support the network believe that the update is a step toward the network’s readiness for bigger institutional use cases. There has been some buzz about the tokenized settlement and enterprise blockchain ecosystem lately.

In addition, the software deadline is coming when the general software is being developed in the network. The XRP Ledger Foundation has recently talked about plans for quantum resistant security features later in the year.

For context, XRPL’s account structure and key rotation system could aid in future cryptographic improvements, the group said.

The foundation also recently appointed Ripple’s David Schwartz to the honorary board to provide guidance on the development work going forward.
