Crypto debit cards spend from crypto you already hold, converting it to dollars at checkout. In comparison, a crypto credit card works like a normal credit card: the issuer extends you a line of credit, you spend against it and earn crypto rewards, and you get a bill at the end of the cycle. No crypto needed up front.
The difference matters for tax, credit building, purchase protection, and your daily crypto exposure.
| Crypto debit cards | Crypto credit cards | |
| Funding source | Your existing crypto balance | A line of credit from the issuer |
| What happens at checkout | Crypto is sold to fiat to complete the purchase | Fiat is borrowed from the issuer. No crypto involved |
| Credit building | No credit check. Not reported to bureaus | Credit check required. Can positively or negatively affect your credit score |
| Tax treatment | Every purchase is treated as a taxable disposal. Capital gain or loss based on cost basis vs. value at time of spend | Not a taxable disposal. The crypto reward functions like a purchase rebate |
| Purchase protection | None beyond standard card network coverage | Extended warranties and dispute rights |
| Best for | Long-term holders liquidating small amounts occasionally | Frequent spenders who want to preserve holdings and get purchase protection |
US residents have access to true crypto credit cards, largely due to the country’s mature consumer credit system.
The Crypto.com Visa Signature Credit Card leads the pack, offering up to 6% back in BTC or CRO through the Level Up program. Close behind, the Gemini Credit Card offers up to 4% crypto back with no annual fee, with rewards paid in more than 70 supported cryptocurrencies. The Coinbase One Card also offers up to 4% Bitcoin back (plus up to 5% on eligible travel booked through Coinbase Travel), while the Venmo Credit Card automatically converts your cash back into your chosen cryptocurrency.
Unlike crypto debit cards, your purchases are funded by a credit line, so spending doesn’t require selling your crypto holdings at checkout. This matters for tax, as rewards are received as rebates rather than income, so they aren’t taxed at the point you earn them. If you later sell or trade the crypto rewards after they appreciate, any subsequent gain or loss may be taxable.
For a detailed comparison of reward rates, spending caps, subscriptions, staking requirements, if any, and overall earning potential, see our Crypto Card Cashback guide.
The IRS treats crypto debit cards and crypto credit cards very differently. When you spend crypto with a debit card, it’s treated as a sale of that property and triggers a taxable disposal event. Any capital gain or loss is calculated using the difference between the asset’s cost basis and its fair market value when it was spent.
If you held the asset for one year or less, any gain is taxed at short-term capital gains rates. On the other hand, if you held it for more than one year, it qualifies for long-term capital gains rates.
By contrast, crypto rewards earned from a credit card are treated as a purchase rebate rather than taxable income. Capital gains tax only applies if the crypto reward is later sold, traded, or spent for more than its cost basis.
These differences also make recordkeeping especially important. For crypto debit cards, it helps to keep records of the acquisition date, cost basis, fair market value at the time of each purchase, and any resulting gain or loss. Beginning with the 2026 tax year, many digital asset brokers and exchanges now report qualifying transactions on Form 1099-DA, giving the IRS greater visibility into digital asset transactions.
This is general information, not tax advice. Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances, so consult a qualified tax professional if you’re unsure how the rules apply to you.
We reviewed crypto cards that eligible US residents can actually open, then ranked them on seven criteria: state availability, card type (credit, debit, or prepaid), rewards after caps, subscription or staking requirements, fees, supported assets and payment networks, and issuer regulatory status.
We also factored in how the IRS treats each card type for tax purposes.
To ensure the rankings are accurate and unbiased, every crypto card review is based on our independent editorial research rather than paid placement. We verified each card against official documentation from the card provider, issuing bank, and payment network. All information was verified in July 2026 and is re-checked monthly to reflect changes in availability, rewards, fees, and card features.
Crypto cards are legal in the US and are generally safe when you choose a reputable provider. Most cards operate through partnerships between regulated US banks, which issue the card on the Visa or Mastercard network, and licensed crypto companies that manage the crypto services.
This structure also shapes how your funds are protected. While USD balances may be eligible for FDIC insurance, cryptocurrencies are not protected by FDIC or SIPC. So, if the custodian or exchange fails, your digital assets may be at risk.
The risks also differ by card type. Crypto debit cards carry counterparty and custody risk because the provider holds and converts your crypto. By contrast, crypto credit cards are funded by a credit line and include consumer protections under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA). However, they require credit approval and may involve interest charges or other borrowing costs.
As with any financial product, review the card issuer, custody model, fees, and regulatory disclosures before applying.
The best stablecoin cards available to eligible US residents include ether.fi Cash, Coinbase Debit Card, and Crypto.com Visa Platinum Prepaid Card.
