.Zil is a new blockchain domain service backed by the Zilliqa Foundation. The system will launch on Zilliqa mainnet in June. The Zilliqa blockchain is a smart contract platform focused on scaling through sharding. The blockchain has a live implementation of sharding and is based in Singapore.

.Zil Roadmap

Pre-orders: Open now. Buy any regular domain for $10. Registrations last for 2 years and will renew in the 3rd year for $5. Also pre-order top domains here.

Testnet: Live as of March 9th. The smart contracts are on testnet and it’s possible to use a testnet wallet to fund a wallet, reserve a domain, and pay it. An auction will launch on testnet in April. Play with the testnet here or check out a walkthrough video.

Mainnet: Live in June 2019. Once contracts are live, all pre-ordered domains will be instantly useable. Users will be able to transfer them freely as well as add cryptocurrency addresses to their domain. This is also the point where the auction will go live.

Blockchain Domain Use Cases

  1. Replace cryptocurrency addresses with human-readable names

Right now paying someone is like this – ask for their cryptocurrency address, they go into their wallet and copy an address, they paste it into an email, send to you, you open the email, copy/paste the address into your wallet, and pay.

With a blockchain domain name, it will be like this – Attach your cryptocurrency addresses to your domain, and tell your friend to pay by typing in yourname.zil

  1. Enable censorship resistant websites

Blockchain domains can be used to build censorship resistant websites. Traditional domain assets are stored on your behalf by custodians like Godaddy and Google Domains. But a blockchain domain is stored in your cryptocurrency wallet and controlled by you so no company or court order can take it.

What’s new about .zil? The 1st blockchain naming service to launch with multicurrency support

On day 1, .zil domains will support multicurrency functionality. This means that users will add their Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, etc. addresses all to one domain. When someone wants to pay, they will go into a supporting wallet, type in yourname.zil, select from a list of currencies that your domain supports, and pay.
