NVIDIA has agreed to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion. This comes as the world’s largest company continues to expand its AI infrastructure and push for more open-weight AI models.

NVIDIA Agrees To Buy Hugging Face

In a blog post, the company’s CEO Jensen Huang announced that they have agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12,930,300,000. “Together, we will scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide,” he said.

The NVIDIA CEO noted that over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators use Hugging Face to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications. He added that over 200,000 companies use the platform to discover, evaluate, customize and deploy AI.

This move comes as the company continues to expand its AI infrastructure. Last month, the company reached an agreement to build an Ohio data center with OpenAI to serve as the tenant on a 20-year lease. It also launched the Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, the latest model in the Nemotron 3 model family.

Meanwhile, the NVIDIA CEO revealed that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. “Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face,” he assured.

Hugging Face To Keep Supporting Open Source Models

Hugging Face will also continue to support open-source and open-weight models. Additionally, the platform will also continue to support multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment, Huang noted.

The NVIDIA CEO also cited the open letter, which he coauthored, championing the importance of open weights to the AI economy. Firms such as NVIDIA, Meta, and Microsoft had warned the U.S. against open-weight AI restrictions, noting that these models were important to America’s AI leadership.

Huang predicts that Hugging Face can serve as the global AI community at unprecedented scale as the opportunity for open models accelerates. “NVIDIA’s infrastructure, engineering and global reach can help improve platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities, while preserving the open ecosystem that made Hugging Face foundational,” he added.
