Breaking: Bitcoin Drops Under $78K As US PCE Inflation Comes Hotter Than Expected
Bitcoin declined below $78,000 on Wednesday following the latest U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation report that revealed price pressures were higher than expected. The shift followed BTC’s breaching of the $80,000 level earlier in the day, adding to the volatility that dominated the markets prior to a key U.S. economic release.
Bitcoin Dipped After Hot US PCE Inflation Data
After dipping, Bitcoin price had recovered to $78,043 very briefly, but was still 0.64% lower over the last 24 hours. Prior to the pullback, the BTC price hit an intraday high of $81,235.03, its first time trading above $80,000 since May.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported the headline price index for PCE went up 0.2% in July compared to the month before. It is much higher 0.1% monthly pick-up was expected. Meanwhile, the U.S. PCE inflation was at 3.7% annually in comparison to the forecast of 3.6%.
The Core PCE, which removes the volatile food and energy items, also ticked up 0.2% month-on-month, in line with economists’ forecast. The annual core reading was unchanged at 3.3%, also on par with forecasts.
The inflation figures keep the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge well above its 2% target. BEA data showed the annual PCE rate had touched 4.1% in May but is now back to 3.7%.
Impact On BTC, Crypto
The stronger-than-expected headline reading triggered renewed pressure across risk assets as traders assessed the implications for U.S. monetary policy. Treasury yields also rose after the release of inflation, as their worries were that continued price growth would curtail the room for looser monetary policy.
For Bitcoin, the inflation data came after a magnificent BTC surge beyond the $81,000 level. The current drop brought BTC back into the $78,000 range, bringing its recent rally to the test.
