Coinbase Becomes First Major Regulated Exchange to Offer Crypto Perpetuals in Canada
Highlights
- Coinbase launches 23 crypto futures contracts in Canada, covering Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other assets.
- Eligible Canadian investors can trade perpetual and dated futures with leverage reaching up to 10x.
- Coinbase expands its Everything Exchange strategy with regulated crypto, commodity and index futures for Canadians.
Coinbase has launched regulated crypto derivatives for eligible Canadian investors, offering perpetual and dated futures with up to 10x leverage as the exchange expands its international derivatives business.
Coinbase Launches Crypto Perpetuals in Canada
Through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), eligible Canadian traders can now access 23 perpetual and dated crypto futures. The contracts cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and 20 other digital assets. As a result, sophisticated investors can hedge existing positions or trade in either market direction.
CFM operates as a futures commission merchant registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. In Canada, the company offers these contracts under an international exemption, while access remains limited to eligible sophisticated and institutional investors under Canadian securities rules.
Meanwhile, nano-sized contracts allow traders to participate with lower upfront capital requirements. Users can take long or short positions with leverage of up to 10x. For a limited period, introductory pricing starts at 0.02% per trade plus $0.11 per contract.
Coinbase Adds Commodities and Index Futures
Beyond crypto, the Canadian derivatives rollout includes five commodity futures, with contracts linked to gold, silver and oil. Index products such as COIN50 are also available, expanding the range of markets accessible through the platform.
Derivatives can help investors manage price exposure without directly buying or selling an underlying asset. For example, the Bank of Canada has reported that about one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial corporations use derivatives to hedge risks to their earnings.
At the same time, crypto derivatives represent a large part of global digital asset trading. Coinbase said worldwide crypto derivatives volume stands at about 4.4 times spot trading volume. However, regulated access to these contracts has remained limited for Canadian traders.
Coinbase Expands Its Everything Exchange Strategy
The Canadian launch forms part of Coinbase’s broader “everything exchange” strategy, which aims to combine crypto and traditional financial products. Coinbase Canada has operated as a restricted dealer since April 2024 and is pursuing CIRO dealer status.
Meanwhile, Coinbase continues to expand its financial infrastructure. Webull Canada recently selected Coinbase’s Crypto-as-a-Service platform to provide crypto trading and custody services within its own investment platform.
In addition, Coinbase has started rolling out U.S. stock trading to eligible UK customers. The expansion into crypto derivatives, equities and other financial products continues to widen the exchange’s international offering.
For more secure and regulated trading options, retail investors are increasingly looking for the best crypto exchange Canada has to offer as crypto adoption grows.
