USDT issuer Tether has completed its first independent financial audit, with the top auditing firm KPMG issuing an unqualified opinion on the firm’s 2025 financial statements. CEO Paolo Ardoino described it as a defining moment as the stablecoin issuer potentially eyes an expansion in the U.S.
Tether Completes First Independent Financial Audit
In a press release, the USDT issuer announced the successful completion of a full, independent audit of its 2025 financial statements, conducted by KPMG. “The audit, completed in accordance with applicable professional standards, represents one of the most significant milestones in Tether’s history, it is also the largest inaugural financial audit in history,” the release read.
This comes months after Tether first tapped KPMG to audit its financial statements following years of FUD against its stablecoin reserves. The stablecoin issuer revealed that the ‘big four’ auditing firm issued an unqualified audit opinion of its financial statements.
“KPMG issued an unqualified audit opinion of Tether’s financial statements, meaning in KPMG’s opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Company as of December 31, 2025, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year ended in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles,” Tether said.
Meanwhile, as part of the audit process, KPMG is said to have physically counted and inspected every individual gold bar held by the stablecoin issuer. The audit firm also examined the company’s reserves backing the USDT stablecoin and its Tether Gold token.
A “Defining Moment” For The Stablecoin Industry
Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino described the completion of the audit as a defining moment for the stablecoin industry. He cited claims by “detractors” that the USDT issuer could not complete an audit and had refused to subject itself to the most rigorous scrutiny.
“We have once again proven them wrong. Completing our financial statement audit sets a new standard for the industry and reflects the leadership we’ve brought to this market from the start,” he said. The company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Simon McWilliams, echoed similar sentiments, describing the audit as a “landmark” moment for the USDT issuer and the industry.
The CFO also noted that the audit corroborates their 2025 report, which showed that their reserves exceed the liabilities by $6.814 billion. The completion of the audit comes as Tether eyes expansion in the U.S., especially with the launch of its GENIUS-Act-compliant USAT stablecoin at the start of the year.
