The Senate will wait until after the August recess for a floor vote on the CLARITY Act, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) announced today.

On X, POLITICO reporter Jordain Carney shared the update in reference to Thune’s confirmation. Carney wrote, “NEWS: Thune just confirmed our scoop that Senate is punting clarity vote until September.” She added, “Said they would get it teed up for when they return.”

The comments by Thune confirm that the crypto market structure bill will not be voted on by the Senate before the next break. It is anticipated that the Senate will convene again in mid-September.
For context, the CLARITY Act aims to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets. The legislation aims to provide more transparency and regulation in the crypto industry.
Democrats Push For More Negotiations Before Vote
Republican leaders had been trying to get the bill passed during the recess. But the bill hasn’t mustered enough Democratic support.
Democrats in the Senate want more discussions on outstanding issues. They have been skeptical of a fast-track compromise that would let multiple pending bills, such as the CLARITY Act, head through the break with a bill.
If Thune were to file a cloture motion on the bill, it would be up to the Committee on Environment and Public Works to determine whether to proceed with it. The procedural step would get the bill ready to be voted on and debated in the Senate.
It would take the approval of all 100 senators to approve a time agreement. GOP leaders have been looking to make such a deal to finish up unfinished business before lawmakers adjourn Washington.
The CLARITY Act passed the House and was sent to the Senate for consideration before. Senators will be expected to resume their talks prior to their September return.
